Health Benefits for Mom

As the newborn nurses, the hormone oxytocin is released in mom's body, causing the uterus to contract and shrink, which help compress the bleeding vessels where the placenta was attached. This is nature's way to help mom recover immediately following childbirth. Breastfeeding also enables mom to shed much of the weight gained during pregnancy as milk production burns many calories.

Baby loves being close to mom and nursing creates a great skin-to-skin bonding time. In those first weeks when mom is totally sleep deprived, breastfeeding actually helps by making mom sit down and rest so that each nursing period can also be a short, and much needed nap.

In the months after childbirth, continued breastfeeding delays the return of the menstrual bleeding which is a multi-fold blessing. For the first several months it is nature's birth control to give mom time to recover and gain strength before another pregnancy. It also protects mom from anemia, as iron loss due to breastfeeding is far less than that which is lost in menstrual bleeding.

Breastfeeding has long-term positive effects for moms in both reduced risk for osteoporosis and lowering the risk for breast, ovarian and uterine cancers.
